Digitalizing a Grassroots Revolution: Scaling the Mug Library

About the Project

Take a highly successful, analog, volunteer-run mug-sharing program and build the underlying digital public web platform needed to scale it to new towns across Australia.

The old website was static, informational, and hidden. It didn’t help a frustrated commuter find a mug right now, nor did it make it easy for new cafes to sign up. We needed to transform the website from a passive brochure into an active, live logistical tool.

The Problem

Keep-Cup Fatigue Meets a Static Web Presence

People want to do the right thing, but they forget their reusable cups. Mug Library solved this physically by putting beautiful, unique ceramic mugs from local op-shops directly on cafe counters.

The Solution

A Live, Frictionless Community Hub

We engineered a modern, ultra-lightweight web platform focused entirely on speed, accessibility, and community pride. Because users access this on the go, the mobile UX had to be completely flawless.

Feature Breakdowns

The Live "Mug Finder" Map

We built a custom, lightweight geospatial mapping component. Users can open the site on their phones, tap a single button, and instantly see every participating cafe near them, color-coded by current mug availability.

The Zero-Friction Cafe Portal

We replaced clunky onboarding with an automated business registry. Cafes can apply, get approved, and be added to the live public map in under 5 minutes, entirely automated via the backend.
